OK, I was wrong about Abraham getting the hint after the first time he had his wife pretend to be his sister. He does it again with Abimelech. But my favorite passage is in Chapter 22. He is talking with Isaac going up to sacrifice. Isaac mentions that they have the wood and the fire, but nothing to sacrifice. But Abraham says that God will provide. It never specifies how Abraham thinks this will happen, but he trusts God.

Genesis 17-19

As I am reading Genesis 19 and I read the story of Sodom I must admit that there is something that I don't understand. Two angels encounter Lot and he lets them in his house. They are soon surrounded by all the men who want to rape these men,. Lot offers up his two daughters instead. It sounds like Lot is opting for the lesser of two evils.

Genesis 15:4 One of my favorite verses in the old testament when I was kid even though I didn't understand it. I mean how could one person have so many kids as stars in the sky. Yet again, even after we hear the promises of God, we are a people slow to trust and Sarai his wife devises a plan to give Abram a son through Hagar, her servant. I had something happen to me today where I had the choice to trust God in the middle of it. It was hard and everything inside of me told me to run and figure out how to make it work on my own. But I trusted and he came through. I hope this is the first step of many towards trusting God.

Genesis 12-13

I think this is the first mention of Abram. God in the beginning tells Abram how is he is going to bless him. Telling him to leave his country, but he promises to make his name great. But just as it was getting difficult, he leaves to go to Egypt. He doesn't trust God to bless those who bless him and curse those who dishonor him. He tells his wife to lie and say that she is his sister. Abram doesn't trust God to keep his promise. I wonder if this is on his mind later as he is leading his son Isaac up the mountain to be sacrificed to the Lord. Part of the reason I am doing this blog is that I will remember the the things that God is showing me this year in the word so I will not forget in times of trouble and famine.

How often do I try to make my way in this world under my own strength. At least once a day and I fall on my face, But in his loving discipline, he allows me to fail. Then he picks me up, and I do it again then next day

Genesis 8-9, Psalm 12

Covenant: Websters calls it a formal agreement.
This is the first covenant between God and Man. God promises Noah to never to destroy the earth by flood. He also promises man to have dominion over every animal.
I like Psalm 12. To me it sounds like David is lamenting the lack of holiness but then God promises to look after the needs of the oppressed and needy, he promises to be our strong tower. I want to be more like David and lament the existence of evil and ask for Gods provision to overcome it. God you are faithful to keep your promises. Forgive me when I forget.

One Simple line. The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth...But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
Noah truly walked with God and here is the thing; when God asked him to do something truly out of the ordinary and unusual Noah didn't hesitate. He was obedient. When you walk with God and your thoughts are his thoughts, people might begin to think you are no longer normal. But I am beginning to see that normal as the world sees it is not so desirable at all.

Sin: It is seductive and subtle. Plants seeds of doubt. Listen the words "Did God actually say?" How many times do we say variations of those words in order to justify what we know is blatant disobedience. Next there is lesson for the men. We are to protect the women from the attacks of this world. But we are too busy chasing the next bonus or the next thing we hope will distract us from the pain in our own heart.
Lastly, when I first read about God kicking Adam and Eve out of the garden, I thought how cruel. For some reason we never paid attention to the fact that God was concerned that is they ate of the tree of life, they would live forever. But they would live forever separated from him.How often we see God's discipline as hateful when he is truly looking out for our best interests.

All I can think about when I read these verses is I can't wrap my mind around some awesome power so I don't even think about it. I pray that someday I will have that much awe for his power and majesty.

There are several things in this passage but I am struck mostly by the majesty of creation. I have been several places that have taken my breath away. Mountains in Honduras, Ruins in Mexico, the white beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. The bible says that creation itself is testimony to the existence of God. But what hits me is after everything; the oceans, the sky, fish, birds. God saw that it was good. But it wasn't until he created man and woman that he saw everything he created and said it was very good. We are God's crowning achievement, not some cosmic accident. We are made to glorify God. We are made in his image.

Why am I doing this?
The simple answer is God told us to. We are supposed to know this word. But the long answer is a little more complicated. After getting back from a mission trip in India, I was convicted about how little I know the word. I have read the Bible since getting back into the country but didn't have a direction until today. I was listening to a podcast with the founder of the daily audio bible. He talked about how reading the bible over the course of year in a deliberate way had revolutionized his relationship with God. So my plan is to go through a yearly reading plan and blog what God is showing me during my time in the word. I don't necessarily care if anyone reads this. My hope is that this will keep me accountable. I also want to see how my much my thoughts and desires change as a result of doing this.
